90,000 more Mainers have gained health insurance since Governor Mills expanded the program immediately upon taking office. On 4/4/22, Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau, Health and Human Services Chair Senator Ned Claxton, and Rep. Sam Zager celebrated the huge success of Mainecare expansion on its third anniversary in Portland. Sam, a practicing physician in Portland told reporters: “It has helped us better respond to the opioid and other chronic and acute health needs before and since this COVID pandemic. It also happens to save tons of money in the long run.”
